How to be a nationalist!

"Aa mere watan ke logon..........,"the sound of this evergreen melody by Lata Mangeshkar being performed in a school nearby woke me up. My mind was confused between either getting up or taking a trip down the memory lane remembering those good ol' school days where Independence day celebration was just as grand as any other Indian festive affair. Determined, not to waste the morning somehow I woke up. I put up the national flag on the door which I had bought the day before from a young kid selling them on a traffic signal. 'I fail to understand the irony that the people selling these flags are the ones to whom the nation fails to even provide the basic human needs'.  I glared across the hallway noticing that my neighbour had outdone me by decorating his entire door with flags and heart shaped balloons having the Indian tricolor.'Well good for him. But,maybe instead of decorating a particular area for just a day we bothered more about keeping at least every place affecting us organised and clean'.

I opened my WhatsApp only to find that instead of just those wishes, there was a debate going around everywhere whether it was the 68th or 69th Independence day. I don't want to make a comment on which number is right. But yes,now I see the obsession of this country with a 1.2 billion population! ' Only if we were more concerned about the fact that its only about half a decade before 2020 and some of the targets we set; like being a developed nation or winning 25 Olympic medals seem too far away from the horizon'. Facebook was an even bigger blunder. These so called reports about the Indian national anthem being chosen the world's best were flooding everywhere. "Bajrangi bhaijaan"  was the biggest national hero on the national news whilst the real heroes were busy guarding the borders as we celebrated this national holiday.' Saffron indicating the strength and courage of the country. The white middle band indicating peace and truth. The green colour showing the fertility, growth and auspiciousness of the land. Do any of us still remember these. I didn't see this anywhere on facebook, rather a wall of people competing to be the biggest nationalist'.

There is a song by Green Day named 'Song of the century' with the most simple lyrics yet a very deep insight:
Sing us a song of the century
That's louder than bombs and eternity
The era of static and contraband
That's leading us into the promised land
Tell us a story that's by candlelight
Waging a war and losing the fight

They're playing the song of the century
of panic and promise and prosperity
Tell me a story into that goodnight

Sing us a song for me ...

Maybe this is a phase the entire country is going through. You,me and everyone else.  We have stopped being who we want to be and stopped chasing what we should! We are all blindfolded and being lead where we believe we should be but really should not be!
